The German customs service has been enjoying considerable success with a sniffer dog called Aki, discovering cash being taken out of the country at Frankfurt airport.

In late June and early July alone, the dog sniffed out 247,280 euros in undeclared cash from a total of 12 individuals travelling to destinations outside the European Union. In one case the haul was 52,000 euros.

It is illegal to take out, or bring in, more than 10,000 euros without declaring it. A customs spokesperson at Frankfurt am Main airport told the BBC that cash controls are important for “combating tax evasion, money laundering and international terrorism.”
