After the Paris soccer club Paris Saint Germain lost to German club Bayern Munich by one goal on Sunday night, rioters took to the Champs Elysee and overturned and set fire to several cars, smashed the windows of a number of upmarket shops, and looted a jewellery store.

Sixteen police officers were injured in the violence, the authorities said. A total of 151 arrests were made, including 49 minors. The Burma jewellery store was a prime target, with looting to the tune of several hundreds of thousands of euros.

Earlier in the evening the police issued 404 tickets for the non-wearing of masks and evacuated bars and cafes where social distancing was not being observed. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd in the early hours.
