A summit of permanent Representatives of the EU’s 27 states will not discuss the issue of Brexit at its planned meeting on September 2.
EU officials are of the opinion that the UK is ready to see the Brexit transition talks fail, leading to a no-deal Brexit. The British government would them blame EU intransigence.
Meanwhile, chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said it was still possible for a deal on future ties to be agreed by mid-October, the last possible date. The main bones of contention are fishing rights for EU vessels and state aid rules, but there are other issues where the gap between the two sides shows little signs of narrowing.
