A total of more than 400 illegal migrants landed in the UK on Wednesday, a record number for one day. The 409 people accounted for by the UK’s Border Force arrived in 27 small boats.
Earlier in the day Prime Minister Boris Johnson once again pointed the finger at people smugglers, saying that the UK had become “a target and a magnet for those who would exploit vulnerable people in this way”.
The French authorities intercepted and rescued 53 migrants before they reached UK waters in the English Channel. Last month the UK’s interior minister, Priti Patel, said she would strive to make the Channel route to the UK “unviable.”
