Volta Trucks, a Swedish start-up, has unveiled plans to start production of its 16-tonne electric truck in the UK from 2022.
Trials of the Volta Zero will start in 2021 with the parcel delivery firm DPD. The company’s CEO said on Wednesday that its aim is to have 500 electric rucks on the road by 2022.
Volta is seeking more investors for its project.
In the meantime, the European Commission has added battery element lithium to its critical raw materials list on Thursday.
The Commission said that the European Union needs to diversify its sources of materials, an issue that was highlighted after global supplies were disrupted at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
At present the EU relies for much of its raw materials on single countries, including China, Turkey, and South Africa.
