While French leaders have made it clear that there will be no new national lockdown in the face of a second wave of coronavirus infections, two of the major cities have taken their own measures as sanctioned by Paris.
New limits on gatherings are being introduced in Bordeaux and Marseille. Student parties, school outings and other gatherings have been banned. Masks are now compulsory in 27 high-risk areas in the Bouches du Rhone Department, which includes Marseille.
In Bordeaux, additional police have been deployed to enforce the measures. Medical sources said that Marseille is reaching near-capacity in intensive care units as infections have spread.
