Internet security guru John McAfee has been arrested in Spain on an international warrant from the US, according to the Justice Department in Washington.
McAfee (75) has been accused of failing to file tax returns in the US from 2014 to 2018 and putting assets including real estate, a vehicle and a yacht in the name of other individuals to hide them from the tax authorities.
McAfee was arrested on October 3 at Barcelona airport while attempting to travel to Istanbul. He faces a five-year jail term if convicted of tax evasion.
The elusive Internet pioneer has led a colourful life in recent years. Last year he was arrested in the Dominican Republic after entering the country with firearms and ammunition. He was also a person of interest in a murder investigation in Belize, but never charged.
The McAfee company was sold to Intel for 7.7 billion in 2010. He sold his stake in 1994.
