Illegal immigration to the United Kingdom is often in the news, but it seems there is now a new trend, taking desperate people in the opposite direction.

A Romanian truck driver has been jailed for 31 months for attempting to take an Indian, a Bangladeshi and two Egyptians from Dover to Calais. All four had overstayed their visas and saw no reason to stay in the UK, the court in Canterbury heard.

The driver claimed that another Romanian lorry driver had offered him 200 pounds for each person to take them across the Channel to France. However, the judge said he found this ‘spur of the moment’ theory implausible.

The truck was stopped by officers from the National Crime Agency near Dover at 13:30 on October 1 this year.
