EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has set a Wednesday deadline for talks on a free trade agreement between the EU and the UK.

The British parliament is also due to debate contentious legislation on the same day that effectively overrides the Withdrawal Bill passed earlier this year.

All the indications are that too many stumbling blocks remain for an agreement between the two sides, even on fishing which had been reported at the weekend to have found sufficient common ground with a compromise on an extension of EU access to UK waters.

PM Johnson is due to speak again on Monday night to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. That conversation may mark the end of talks.
