Anne Hildago, the socialist Mayor of Paris, has reacted with derision to a 90,000-euro fine for employing disproportionately more women than men.

Eleven women and five men had been promoted in 2018, breaching a national rule introduced in 2013 intended to bring about gender parity in employment at a time when more top posts were occupied by men.

The rule was intended to ensure that no more than 60 percent of top positions were occupied by either men or women. In fact, under the socialist mayor, 69 percent of new top appointments went to women,

“I am happy to announce we have been fined,” feminist Ms Hidalgo said, adding: “”This fine is obviously absurd, unfair, irresponsible and dangerous.”
