The EU’s Medicines Agency has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the European Commission will most likely add its own seal of approval on Monday evening.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said: “It’s a decisive moment in our efforts to deliver safe & effective vaccines to Europeans.”

Guy Verhofstadt, the prominent MEP, tweeted: “Now governments have to show they’re prepared. This is an EU success story: using size in negotiating, showing speed and solidarity in giving all Europeans an equal chance to get the vaccine asap.”

An EU-coordinated roll-out of the vaccine is expected to start immediately with the first vaccinations likely from December 27.
