The UK and the EU have agreed a post-Brexit trade deal, just seven days from the end of the 11-month transition period.

The UK’s prime minister’s office said on Thursday afternoon: “We have got Brexit done and we can now take full advantage of the fantastic opportunities available to us”.

For the European side chief Ursula von der Leyen claimed it was a “fair and balanced” deal. She told a press conference in Brussels: ”This was a long and winding road but we have got a good deal to show for it. It is fair, it is a balanced deal, and it is the right and responsible thing to do for both sides.”

On one of the major sticking points, she said there will be a five-and-a-half year transition period for the fishing industry.

Pointedly, she added: “It is time to leave Brexit behind, our future is made in Europe,” she added.

Mr Johnson’s spokesperson said: “We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters.” The UK government has “delivered this great deal for the entire United Kingdom in record time, and under extremely challenging conditions.”
